First thing you need to do is to stop comparing your kid with others. The feeling of competition will first take away your night’s sleep.   • Simultaneous Teaching of Phonics and Sight Word Recognition: Obviously, it is difficult for anyone to memorize all the words. Same with the kids, they also cannot memorize a huge amount of words. Instead, make your child learn phonics or sound spelling patterns in order to make out new words while reading. Along with this, it’s very important to enable children to gain a sight word base while they are learning sound spellings. With the solid base of sight words they can recognize which makes reading much easier for them. Using sight words, kids will be able to attain more than 300 sight words that commonly appear in children’s books.
  • Teach Phonics in Real Time Situations: Suppose you have taught ten new words to your child. Use those ten words frequently in your conversation with your child in different situations. While cooking, you can ask your child to help you and use those words. This way, child will be able to use those new words in his/her conversation and grasp the meaning of the same word in different situations. You can repeat those words not one or two days, try to use for next few days. This strategy will increase the vocabulary of your child as well.
  • Make use of Images: Use images wherever you can. Images are just magical for several children. You can click the picture in your mobile phone, may be a weird house, an interesting building, a park, anything with lots of characteristics. After returning home, show those pictures and ask them to describe verbally what they saw. It would be very effective when they come across the reality of the object, the oral description of the image. After doing this, if you read words which are shown in picture, child will take deep interest because he/she has seen himself/herself.
  • Use A Body Motion: This is another technique to enhance reading skills in your child. The child who is good with some physical activity will get benefit from the physical movement in learning. You can tell them to make their hand as elephant’s trunk, or jump here and there like a monkey. This will increase their enjoyment and get into reading with more interest. Even you can make a body movement for words like cry (you can artificially cry), try (try to pull a heavy object), sell (act like a shopper and customer. This will keep the interest in reading and body motion for a specific word will help in the long run for your child.
  • Visualization: The practice of visualization is also vital when you don’t know how to help children those who can’t read. You can rely on pictures which they make in their imagination for learning things. Sometimes, when you show the picture of a specific thing, child quickly grasp it and able to memorize instantly. They have made the image in their mind and next time when you read the same word with them, they recall the same image in their brain and quickly make out.
  • Keep Reading Short and Effective: Make sure that you target a small portion of the story initially. Avoid being pushy with your child if he/she gets tired. You may precede reading wherever he has left the lesson. Gain confidence of your child by understanding that he/she is tired. However, whatever you are reading for them or whatever part of the text is reading should be done thoroughly by practicing all the strategies discussed above.
